Brief History of Butler County
Located in Alabama, Butler County was created out of Conecuh County and Monroe County on December 13, 1819. Butler County was named after Captain William Butler. He was born in Virginia and fought in the Creek War. At the time of the 2000 census, Butler County had a population of 21,399. Its county seat and largest city is Greenville. Butler County is bordered by Lowndes County, Crenshaw County, Covington County, Conecuh County, Monroe County, and Wilcox County.
