Brief History of Clarke County
Clarke County, located in Alabama, was created out of Washington County. Clarke County was founded by the Mississippi Territory on December 10, 1812. Clarke County became a dry county in 1937, where it is prohibited to sell alcoholic beverages. The first county seat, Clarkesville, was founded in 1820. The county seat was moved to Grove Hill in 1831. During the 2000 census, Clarke County, had a population of 27, 867.
