Brief History of Alabama-
Alabama suffered economic hardship, from the American Civil War until World War II. The dependence on agriculture affected Alabama and many other Southern States. As agriculture transitioned into heavy manufacturing, the economy recovered. Today the state of Alabama has invested in education, health care, and banking. Industries such as mineral extraction, automobile manufacturing, steel production and fabrication take a huge role in Alabama’s economy.
Alabama doesn’t have an official nickname but it’s known as the “Heart of Dixie” or the “ Yellowhammer State.” Yellowhammer also happens to be the state bird. Birmingham, which is the largest city in Alabama, is a part of Jefferson and Shelby County. Montgomery is the state’s capital. The center of population is located in Chilton County which is right outside an area known as Jemison Division.
Alabama has an inland waterway access to the Midwest via the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. This beneficial access in located in the city of Mobile. The busy seaport is on the Gulf of Mexico and it’s the only saltwater port in Alabama.
2,700 permanent jobs were promised to the people in Alabama on May 2007, when a location north of Mobile was selected by German steelmaker, ThyseenKrupp, for a $3.7 billion steel production plant.
