Brief History of Alaska-

Sold at only 2 cents per acre, Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867. Congress paid total of $7.2 million after concluding that Alaska’s resources would vitally play a huge role in nation’s future growth. On May 11, 1912 the state Alaska became an organized territory. Then on January 3, 1959 Alaska became the 49 th state of the U.S. The name " Alaska" is derived from the Aleut alaxsxaq, meaning "the mainland.” It is also known as Alyeska, the "great land", an Aleut word derived from the same root.

Alaska is bordered by Yukon Territory and British Columbia, Canada, to the east, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to the west and the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Ocean to the north.

Even though Alaska’s capital, Juneau, is located on the mainland of the North American Continent, it is inaccessible by land because there aren’t any roads that connect Juneau to the rest of the North American Highway system.

Most of Alaska’s population is in the southern coastal region, which is South Central Alaska. Palmer, Wasilla, Anchorage and many other growing towns lie within this area. This area includes Petroleum industrial plants, transportation, tourism, and two military bases that take part in the economy.

Sitka , Juneau, and Anchorage are the three largest cities in the U.S. by area. Anchorage is Alaska’s most populated city. It is home to 260,283 people in 2000. Wasilla and Palmer are expected to experience a huge population growth between 2000 and 2010.Halibut Cove is the richest location in Alaska by per capita income.
