Brief History of Arkansas-
Two U.S. senators from Arkansas had a dispute about the pronunciation of the sate name. One wanted to pronounce the word ar-kan-sas and the other wanted ar-kan-saw. Then 1881 the dispute was settled by making ar-kan-saw the official pronunciation of the state. The name Arkansas derives from the same root as the name for the State of Kansas. The Kansas tribe of American Indians are closely associated with the Sioux tribes. The word is a French pronunciation of a Quapaw work meaning “land of downriver people” or “people of the south wind.”
Arkansas ’s eastern border is formed by the Mississippi River, except in Clay and Greene Counties, which is where the St. Francis River forms the western boundary of the Missouri Bootheel. Arkansas shares its southern border with Louisiana, its northern border with Missouri, its eastern border with Tennessee and Mississippi, and its western border with Texas and Oklahoma.
Little Rock is a city located in the central portion of the state. Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas and the most populous city in the state.
