Brief History of Albany, CA

The city of Albany, located in Alameda County, is situated along the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. Albany’s original residents were the Ohlone Native Americans. They lived peacefully at the base of Albany Hill along Cerrito Creek. In 1820, a large portion of the East Bay was granted to Luis Maria Peralta from the King of Spain. Peralta divide the land among his three sons. The area which included Berkeley and Albany was given to Peralta’s son, Jose Domingo. The land was mainly used for cattle farming.

Many settlers headed west after the discovery of gold and the entry of California into the United States. Subsequently, ending the land grant economy. The Peralta land was eventually divided and sold as farms or homesteads. Albany became incorporated in 1908 as the City of Ocean View. A year later the voters changed the name to Albany, in honor of the first mayor’s birthplace. After adopting the city’s first charter in 1927, Albany received full control over its own governance.
