Brief History of Alturas, CA
The City of Alturas was originally an Achumawi village known as Kosealekte. Prior to the arrival of white men, Alturas was originally inhabited by a branch of the Pit River tribe of Native Americans. Alturas was initially named Dorris Bridge, after Presley Dorris because he built a bridge across Pit River. The community was renamed Alturas in 1876. Alturas incorporated on September 16, 1901 and currently serves as the county seat for Modoc County.
