Brief History of Arvin, CA
Arvin is a city in Kern County, approximately 15 miles southeast of Bakersfield and 86 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The approximate population in Arvin is 16,200. Arvin has a small town atmosphere driven by its agricultural community that grows crops such as cotton, grain, carrots, potatoes, almonds, oranges, and grapes. The community of Arvin incorporated as a city in 1960. Arvin was named after an area postmaster in the early 1900’s, Arvin Richardson. The second largest earthquake in California, during the 20 th century, nearly destroyed Arvin on July 21, 1952.
