Brief History of Atherton, CA

Atherton was a flag stop on the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad line in 1866. The stop was convenient for the owners of the large estates who lived north of Menlo Park. Atherton was part of the Rancho de las Pulgas. Atherton was named in honor of Faxton Dean Atherton who was one of the first property owners in the south peninsula. Atherton was officially incorporated as a city of San Mateo County on September 12, 1923. Located in San Mateo County, Atherton is bordered by the urban cities of Menlo Park, Redwood City, and Woodside.
