Brief History of Avalon, CA
Avalon-Catalina, is one of the Southern Channel Islands and the closest of the group to mainland California. The small island has been inhabited for nearly 7,000 years. The first occupants in Avalon were the Native Americans who inhabited the area for many centuries. In 1542, the first European visited the island, Spanish explorer, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. It wasn’t until the late 1700’s that the life of the Native Americans had dramatically been altered, after the Spanish colonized the California Coast. The following decades brought the relocation of the Native people from Avalon to the mainland.
