Brief History of Avenal, CA
Named for the wild oats that grew in the area, Avenal or Avena means oats in Spanish. Today Avenal is a city of about 16,000 people in Kings County California, although half of the residents are inmates at the Avenal State Prison. Avenal State Prison is a medium security prison, authorized for lethal injection administration. Most of the non-inmate population either work at the prison or in agriculture. Located on California highway 33 between Bakersfield and Salinas and just down the road from Coalinga in Central California. Over the years, oil exploration has brought many settlers to the area, beginning in earnest around 1900, but the promise of riches never panned out.
