Brief History of Big Sur, CA
Big Sur is located approximately 150 miles south of San Francisco and 300 miles north of Los Angeles. Although there were two Mexican land grants awarded in the 1830's, which included most of the area north of the Big Sur Valley, neither grantee settled on the land. Big Sur houses 3 million acres of wilderness in the Las Padres National Forest. The name Big Sur was derived from the unexplored and unmapped wilderness south of Monterey. Big Sur is located in Monterey County south of Monterey, near Carmel-by-the-Sea.
