Brief History of Boyle Heights, CA
Before of the Compromise of 1850 that let California into the Union, Mexicans and the Gabrielino Native Americans were once the only inhabitants of the area that is now known as Boyle Heights. Mainly as an agricultural region, Boyle Heights grew the food for Los Angeles. The only white American occupants at the time lived in a town, which the Mexicans called Nuestra Senora, La Reina de Los Angeles. By the mid 1800’s Mexicans and some Native Americans still lived in the area, but the western town of Los Angeles was mainly built by white Americans. In 1841, a group of people known as the Workman Party, led by William Workman, migrated to Boyle Heights after leaving the East Coast.
