Brief History of Calabassas, CA
The Chumash Indians were among the first to inhabit Calabasas. They settled near streams and springs where they lived a peaceful life. The acorns from the colossal oak trees in the area took part in their diet. Today, some of those oak trees may be about 500 to 700 years old. The Indian’s way of life changed drastically after the Spanish expeditions in the 1700’s. Six years after the Portola expeditions the Juan de Anza party camped just west of Calabasas. In the 1830’s, three Indians received a El Scorpion, a ranch that occupied a tract in the west Valley. Approximately 25 years, due to his marriage to Espiritu, an Indian who had inherited the land from her father, Miguel Leonis obtained possession of the ranch along with 1,100 acres, including Calabasas.
