Brief History of Calexico, CA
Calexico is a border town located on highway 98 by El Centro and Mexicali, at the south side of Imperial County. In fact Calexico and Mexicali are actually adjoining cities, with one on each side of the U.S. border with Mexico (the name Calexico is a combination of California and Mexico). Although Calexico has a population of about 27,000, it has a small town feel, and a decidedly Hispanic flavor. Calexico is a very important border crossing. Not only does it provide tourist access to Mexico, but it is a very important crossing for Trucks and Trains with direct access to Long Beach, California and Ensenada Mexico. Because of the good transportation access, Calexico has hundreds of acres being used by manufacturing companies, who can tap into the reasonable supply of labor from Mexicali. Calexico, was originally considered a typical party town on the border, especially during the U.S. prohibition. Today, the environment is a far cry from that.
