Brief History of Calipatria, CA
At the intersection of California highway 111 and 115, between the city of Brawley and the Salton Sea, lies the little town of Calipatria, California. Calipatria is known for a couple of things. First, Calipatria is the city with the lowest elevation in the western hemisphere at minus 184 feet. Second, sadly, it is also one of the poorest cities in California, due to its almost exclusive standing as an agricultural center, and decline in those fortunes during the 1990s. As with much of Imperial County, Calipatria’s population is primarily of Hispanic origin, with approximately 75% of the residents of Hispanic descent. Calipatria’s residents built what they call the world’s largest flagpole around, at 184 feet, built so the flag can always fly above sea level.
