Brief History of Camarillo, CA
Camarillo was one of the last of the Mexican land grants and it was once part of the original Rancho Calleguas. The Rancho was approximately 10,000 acres in size when it was given to Jose Pedro Ruiz by Governor Alvarado in 1847. Juan Camarillo, a member of the Hijar-Padres Expedition to California settled in present-day Ventura in 1857. By 1875, Juan Camarillo acquired the land from the Ruiz Family. His son Adolfo took over the operations of the Ranch after his death in 1880. By 1964 Camarillo became an official city in Ventura County. The Ventura freeway made an easy one hour trip for commuters traveling from Los Angeles to Camarillo. The town became more established after the Southern Pacific railroad chose Camarillo as the location for the depot. Also, the Seabee base at Port Hueneme brought many service personnel to the area.
