Brief History of Capitola, CA
Capitola, California is located in Santa Cruz County. Samuel A. Hall founded the city as “ Camp Capitola” in 1874. Known as the oldest beach resort on the West Coast, Capitola had a population of 10,033 at the 2000 census. Native inhabitants known as the Soquel Indians lived in the Capitola area. The Indians were forced to move to Mission Santa Cruz after it established in 1791. During the Mexican era, the Capitola area became part of the Soquel Rancho that was granted to Michael Lodge and his wife, Martina Castro in 1833.
