Brief History of Carlsbad, CA
Carlsbad , California, a city between Oceanside and Encinitas on US Highway 5. It is a city in Northern San Diego County of just under 100,000 people, located on the Pacific Ocean.
In 1886, two German immigrants named Schutte and Church Smith, came from Nebraska to develop homes in Carlsbad. They named the town Carlsbad because they found a well that had the mineral water properties identical to those of a famous health spa in Karlsbad, Bohemia. This intelligence combined with the German origins of town founder Schutte to determine that the name of the community would be Carlsbad. To this day, approximately 20% of Carlsbad’s residents are of German decent. Although Carlsbad is over 100 years old, it was incorporated as late as 1952, primarily as a defense against being annexed by Oceanside, right next door. One of the big attractions of Carlsbad are the flowerfields of Carlsbad Ranch, over 50 acres of the giant Tecolote Ranunculus which attracts thousands of people every year to view their beauty. The city of Carlsbad is a general law city, an interesting concept. That means that rather than have its own chartered set of laws it follows the general laws of the State of California. Although most available land is developed in Carlsbad, increasing density is expected to grow the city to over 135,000 people by the year 2010.
