Brief History of Carmel, CA

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a town located in Monterey County, South of San Francisco. It is believed that the Esselen speaking people were the first Native Americans to inhabit Carmel-by-the-Sea, also known as simply Carmel. The Esselen speaking people were pushed south into the mountains of Big Sur by the Ohlone people during the 6 th century. The first Europeans to explore Carmel were Spanish mariners led by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. Carmel was not colonized until 1770, when Gaspar de Portola and Franciscan Father Juan Crespi returned to the Carmel and founded Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo. In 1821, Carmel became Mexican territory after Mexico gained independence from Spain. By 1833, a Scottish immigrant named John Martin had acquired the lands surrounding the Carmel mission. Then in 1848, Carmel became part of the U. S. after Mexico ceded California.
