Brief History of Chula Vista, CA
Between San Diego and the Mexican Border lies the City of Chula Vista. The history of this city dates back millions of years, as told by the prehistoric fossils in the area. Chula Vista’s modern history started when the Spanish claimed the area and made it part of the land grant called Rancho del Rey. The ranch encompassed the area now known as National City, Chula Vista, Bonita, Sunnyside and the Sweetwater Valley. Rancho del la Nation was used by the Spanish as grazing land for their cattle and horses until 1845 when it was granted to John Forster, the son-in-law of Mexican governor Pio Pico.
Estimated population for Chula Vista is 227,723 people as of 2007, making it the second largest city in San Diego County, behind only San Diego, California. Because of its proximity to the Mexican Border, over 50% of Chula Vista’s population is classified as Hispanic. Chula Vista’s real growth came during WWII, when the Rohr Aircraft company moved to the area and created over 9,000 jobs. After the war, most of the people stayed in the area and Chula Vista was forever changed from an Orchard Town.
