The Serrano Indians were among the first to reside in the area known as Claremont. Mission San Gabriel was founded in 1771, as the Spanish period in California began. The missions owned the vast stretch of land from San Bernardino Mountains to San Pedro Bay. This enormous area included Claremont. The mission padres employed the Serrano Indians as shepherds.
