Brief History of Clear Lake, CA
Native Americans occupied the area that is now Clearlake Basin for almost 11,000 years. Evidence of Native American existence was found by the Spanish missionaries when they arrived in California. As a result of volcanic eruptions and landslides, the landscape of Clearlake changed. Once a large lake connected with the Blue lakes that were just northwest of Clear Lake, they separated from the westward drainage into the Russian river. Clear Lake state park has exhibits of the cities history presented by rangers and docents.
