Brief History of Coachella, CA
The Southern Pacific Railroad founded Coachella as Woodspur in 1876. The Cahuilla tribe traded their land for new lands east of Coachella. When Coachella began to expand in the 1950’s, the rural, family oriented community of Coachella, California contained year-round agricultural corporate farms and fruit groves. In 1901, the residents of Woodspur voted and changed the town’s named to Coachella. In 1946, Coachella incorporated as a city in Riverside County. Known as the “City of Eternal Sunshine,” Coachella is located 28 miles east of Palm Springs, 72 miles east of Riverside, and 130 miles east of Los Angeles.
