The town of Copperopolis, another census designated area in the sierra foothills of Calaveras County, is found on Highway 4, just south of Angels Camp, California. As suggested by its name, Copperopolis is related to the copper mining that occurred here in the late 1860s, even as other towns like Angels Camp, Avery and Arnold were more known for another mineral—GOLD. Unfortunately for the residents of Copperopolis, the cost of shipping the copper was very high, so the copper mining was done infrequently throughout the years until 1946. Now, the copper mines of Copperopolis are primarily tourist draws and reminders of the once rich history.
