Brief History of Coulterville, CA
The unincorporated community of Coulterville is situated in Mariposa County. Counterville is situated about 50 miles from Modesto, California. Coulterville was named after George W. Coulter, who founded the town in 1850 in order to supply the hundreds of miners working the rich placers of Maxwell, Boneyard, and Black Creeks. Rock mining became one of Coulterville’s most important activities after it was discovered that it sat on one of the richest veins of gold-bearing quartz in the Mother Lode.
