Brief History of Cresent City, CA
Just like many other cities in California, Crescent City was first inhabited by Native American tribes. The explorers from Jedidiah Smith’s 1828 expedition were the first European visitors to Crescent City. Incorporated in 1854, Crescent City became the county seat of Del Norte County when the it formed in 1857. According to the 2000 census, Crescent City had a population of 4,006. The 3,300 prisoners at the Pelican Bay State Prison were not included in the census.
