Brief History of Culver City, CA
In 1913, Harry Culver founded Culver City, but it wasn’t until September 20, 1917 that it officially became incorporated. It began as a general law city, but then transitioned into a charter city in 1947. Many of the early families that settled in the area came from different expeditions. One of the soldiers present during the founding of the pueblo of Los Angeles was Francisco Salvador Lugo, who came from Sinaloa, Mexico on Rivera’s 1774 trip. Also from Sinaloa, came soldier Jose Manuel Machado and his wife Maria. They traveled during the Rivera expedition of 1781. After he died in 1810, his sons felt forced to provide for the family’s future. Agustin and Ygnacio Machado acquired land near the pueblo and raised cattle on Rancho La Ballona, which they established in 1819. Culver City was formed from portions of the 14,000 acre Rancho La Ballona and Rincon de Los Bueyes.
