Brief History of Del Mar, CA
In 1882, the Southern California Railroad began its new route from San Diego to San Bernardino. A man by the name of Theodore Loop, who worked for the railroad, instantly fell in love with what he called "the most attractive place on the entire coast." He and his wife, Ella, built a tent city on the beach, which Ella called Del Mar after a popular poem titled, "The Fight on Paseo Del Mar."
“And they’re off…” These are the words most people think of when they think of Del Mar, as it is primarily known for the Del Mar Racetrack, located on the fairgrounds. However, this beach city located between Encinitas and La Jolla has much more to offer. For one thing, Torrey Pines resort and world famous golf course is here. It is a very small city, about 2 square miles on the beach and has about 4,500 people. Del Mar, that started as a tent city, is now regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in California.
