Brief History of Desert Hot Springs, CA
Desert Hot Springs is a city in Riverside County, southeast of San Bernardino between Twentynine Palms and Palm Springs. The first homesteader, Cabot Yerxa, arrived in Desert Hot Springs in 1913 and discovered hot water on Miracle Hill. The San Andreas Fault bisecting the hill causes hot water on one side and cold on the other. Desert Hot Springs was founded on July 12, 1941 by L. W. Coffee. Hot Desert Springs gets its name from the natural hot springs in the area. With only 1,000 residents, Hot Desert Springs incorporated as a city in Riverside County, California in 1963. The population in Hot Desert Springs has doubled in the 1980’s and increased by 5,000 in the 2000 census.
