Brief History of Diamond Bar, CA
A Mexican land grant began Diamond Bar’s recorded history. Governor, Juan Alvarado deeded 4,340 acres to Jose de la Luz Linares on March 30, 1840. This land grant included Brea Canyon and the eastern Walnut Valley. Linares founded Rancho Los Nogales, or Ranch of the Walnut Trees. After he died in 1847, his widow sold a portion of the ranch to Ricardo Vejar. She received 100 calves, $100 in merchandise, and the postulation of her late husband’s debts. Vejar already owned the Rancho San Jose, which is now Pomona. In possession of 10,000 acres, he became the fifth wealthiest landowner in L.A. County after he acquired the rest of Rancho Los Nogales. Vejar ended up with only 464 acres after the United States Government took over California and they resurveyed the old land grants. Due to the droughts during the 1860’s, most of the ranchers were forced to borrow money to feed their cattle. Vejar was among one of the many ranchers that was forced to borrow money. He borrowed $600 for supplies at an interest rate of eight percent per month. Vejar could not pay the $28,000 that he owed for the compounded interest for Diamond Bar. He was forced to pass down his property to two Los Angeles merchants, Isaac Schlesinger and Hyman Tischler.
