Brief History of Downieville, CA
Downieville, the county seat of Sierra County, is the most populous municipality and the only incorporated city in the county. The small community of Downieville is situated northeast of Marysville. Downieville was settled during the California Gold Rush in late 1849. Downieville was first known as, “The Forks,” due to its geographical location. Downieville was later renamed after a Scotsman who led the expedition up the North Fork of the Yuba River, William Downie, who later became the town’s first mayor.
