Brief History of El Centro, CA
El Centro , the county seat of Imperial County just celebrated its 100 th anniversary as a city in April 2008. It is the largest city in Imperial county, in area and in population (about 42,000 people in 2006). The fact that it has two border crossings to Mexico makes this Southern California city of some strategic import. Because its location on highway 8, between Imperial and Calexico gives great access to the important markets of the Southwestern United States, El Centro was destined to become a major wholesale agricultural center. The climate of El Centro tends to be hot and dry, like the rest of Imperial County, with temperatures well over 100 degrees in the Summer. The United States Federal Government is one of the largest, non-agricultural employers in the area, reflecting El Centro’s importance as a regional center.
