Brief History of El Cerrito, CA
Situated across the bay from San Francisco, El Cerrito is located in Contra Costa County between Richmond and Oakland. El Cerrito was founded by the refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. At that time, El Cerrito and its surrounding area was known as Don Victor Castro’s Rancho San Pablo. The community of El Cerrito was made up of 1,500 people at the time of incorporation in 1917. El Cerrito translates to little hill in Spanish.
