Brief History of El Segundo, CA
Incorporated in 1917, El Segundo is now known as a major aeronautical and industrial business center. It was originally part of Rancho Sausal Redondo, which means “Ranch of the Round Clump of Willows.” The area nearly took up 25,000 acres which stretched as far west as Playa del Rey, as far east as Inglewood, and as far south as Redondo Beach. In May 1911, five men representing the Standard Oil Company arrived in El Segundo in search for a prospective location for another oil refinery. El Segundo was the perfect location for the refinery. The sufficient area adjacent to the seashore provided the tankers with the suitable access and the heavily populated area would attract plenty of employees.
