Brief History of Elizabeth Lake, CA

Elizabeth Lake is located in Los Angeles County. In 1924, the western part of Elizabeth Lake was separated by Judge Hughes to created a recreation resort area. The area’s new name became Lake Hughes. Both lakes are actually sag ponds that are situated in the San Andreas Fault. Located west of Palmdale, Elizabeth Lake offers one of the most stunning sceneries in the Antelope Valley. The Tataviam and the Kittanmeuk tribes were once inhabitants of Elizabeth Lake. Those who live nearby claimed that Elizabeth Lake contained the devil’s pet. They often referred to Elizabeth Lake as La Laguna de Diablo or as the Elizabeth Lake Monster. Elizabeth Lake got its official name after Elizabeth Wingfield slipped and fell into the lake during a camping trip with her family.
