Brief History of Elk Grove, CA
Located south of the city of Sacramento on California Highway 99 is the city of Elk Grove, California in Sacramento County. It was founded as a rest stop for stage coaches in the mid 1800s and became a gathering spot for the miners in nearby towns during the gold rush of the 1880s. Despite its close proximity to California’s capital city, Elk Grove developed a different life style and character than Sacramento, with more of a rural, western feel. Elk Grove is another “new” city in Sacramento County, incorporated just 8 years ago in 2000. It is now one of the fastest growing cities in the county, and in 2004/2005 was one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. There are over 136,000 people living in Elk Grove, making it the second biggest city in the County, next to Sacramento. This is a city of relatively high median incomes in excess of $77,000 and where almost 50% of the families have children under the age of 18. Despite its historic western feel, Elk Grove is clearly a city of the future.
