Brief History of Escondido, CA
Escondido is located North of San Diego and East of Oceanside on Highway along California Highway 78 in Northern San Diego County. It is San Diego County’s fourth largest city with a population of approximately 130,000. It is also one of the oldest cities in the county, being started before 1900. Escondido’s history is one of agriculture. It started by growing grapes, and then after the opening of lake Wohlford, it grew citrus and avocados. Because of the explosive growth of people however, houses are rapidly replacing agriculture on the Escondido landscape. One of the biggest events in recent years was the opening of the Stone Brewing Company in Escondido when it moved from San Marcos. Today, Escondido is a full-service, general-law city with five council members elected at large. Escondido operates under the Council-Manager form of government.
