Brief History of Fair Oaks, CA
Just north of California Highway 50, between the American River, Citrus Heights and Carmichael in Sacramento County is the census designated place called Fair Oaks, California. It was founded in 1895 as a citrus oriented community by developing part of the vast citrus groves in the area. It was originally one of the sunset colonies, later to become Fair Oaks. During the great depression of the 1930s a great freeze destroyed the citrus crops and Fair Oaks was no longer a citrus powerhouse. For several years it was a town defined by Aerojet, the largest employer. Now, with ready access to Sacramento and a desirable lifestyle, Fair Oaks California is now primarily known as a bedroom community of Sacramento. Even today, with a population in excess of 28,000 Fair Oaks remains in the unincorporated area of greater Sacramento.
