Brief History of Fontana, CA
Don Antonio Maria Lugo was the earliest recorded landowner in Fontana, located in San Bernardino County. His sons inherited part of the land known as Rancho San Bernardino, but later sold their portion to a group of Mormon settlers in 1851. That portion included part of what is now Fontana, California. The Semi Tropical Land and Water Company gained control of the rancho after the Mormon settlers eventually returned to Salt Lake City. The development of Fontana did not begin until the early 1900’s when the Fontana Development Company acquired the land and established a community called Rosena. The name was changed to Fontana in 1913. Fontana officially incorporated in 1952.
