Brief History of Fort Irwin, CA
Fort Irwin was originally inhabited by Native American Indians. The first recorded pioneer explorations and Indian settlements in Fort Irwin, California occurred when a Spaniard, Father Francisco Garces, traveled the Mojave Indian Trail in 1796. Located in San Bernardino County, Fort Irwin is the location of the National Training Center for the United States Military. In 1826, Jedediah Smith is thought to have been the first American to explore Fort Irwin and its surrounding area.
