Brief History of Fortuna, CA
The small settlement of Fortuna was originally named Slide, but was changed to Springville during the construction of the Springville Mill. It was given that name because of the numerous springs in the area. The name was later changed to Fortuna because there was already a town called Springville. On February 20, 1906 the town of Fortuna incorporated. Although lumbering put Fortuna on the map, it was its agricultural excellence in its vegetable crops, berries, fruits, and fish from the Eel River that made Fortuna famous.
