Brief History of Glendale, CA
In 1798, Corporal Jose Maria Verdugo established the Rancho San Rafael, which included Glendale, Burbank, Eagle Rock, and Highland Park. In 1831, Verdugo died and left his Rancho to his son and daughter. Thirty years later they divided the land equally between each other. Then in 1871, as a result of a court decision known as the “Great Partition,” the Rancho San Rafael was broken up into smaller divisions. In 1887 six people contributed land and created the original 150 acre town that is now known as Glendale.
