Brief History of Goleta, CA
The City of Goleta is located in Santa Barbara County. Goleta is on the northwestern city limits of Santa Barbara, between Buellton and Santa Barbara. The name Goleta derives from the Spanish word for “small ship.” For thousands of years, Goleta was inhabited by the Chumash people. The first European visit occurred in 1542, when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed past Goleta. After several failed attempts, Goleta incorporated in 2002. Goleta experienced one of the deadliest workplace shootings that has ever carried out in the U.S. by a woman. Jennifer San Marco shot and killed seven people, before committing suicide at the postal-processing facility where she had previously worked, on January 30, 2006.
