Brief History of Grass Valley, CA
At the intersection of California Highways 49 and 20 you will find the city of Grass Valley California. In the California gold rush of the 1850s, Grass Valley was the most prolific producer of gold in all of California. In some spots goldminers where shoulder to shoulder in the foothills of this Grass Valley city. Grass Valley suffered a disastrous fire in 1855, and Nevada City burned in 1863, but the towns quickly rebuilt and continued to grow. Many of the people that came to this town during the 1800s were from Cornwall or from England and today, many of the 11,100 residents of Grass Valley claim Cornish ancestry.
