Brief History of Half Moon Bay, CA
Half Moon Bay is a City in San Mateo County, about 17 miles south of San Francisco and 11 miles west of San Mateo. Half Moon Bay is located on the Pacific Ocean coast between Moss Beach and Dan Gregorio. At first Half Moon Bay was primarily used for grazing of cattle and horses belonging to Mission San Francisco de Asis. During the 1840’s the community of Half Moon Bay began to develop and become a more established community in California. The racially diverse community went through several name changes such as San Benito and Spanishtown. Incorporated in 1959, Spanishtown officially renamed Half Moon Bay in 1874.
