Brief History of Hawthorne, CA
Hawthorne 's original inhabitants were Shoshonian Indians in the 1500s. Since then, it has been occupied by several different groups, due to its proximity to the sea, and later, to the Redondo electric railroad. The city was incorporated in 1922. In the early days it was mostly known as a haven for refugees of the dust bowl of Oklahoma and Texas. The city changed from a small rural refuge to a balanced but industrial city in 1930 when Northrop Aircraft Company moved in. What followed was a steady stream of small companies that moved into Hawthorne so they could be close to Northrop. Due to the rapid growth of the aircraft industry, Hawthorne has witnessed a solid and sustained growth in both jobs and real estate. Hawthorne is located west of the 405 freeway just south of the 105 freeway. It borders the towns of Inglewood, El Segundo and Gardena, and is very close to Los Angeles International airport.
