Brief History of Hercules, CA
In 1881 Hercules, located in Contra Costa County, was the California Powder Works company town. The city of Hercules was named after the legendary Greek hero known for his astounding strength. The potent and explosive black powder used by Allied forces in WW I, was produced in Hercules. After the U.S. had entered the war, the Hercules plant became the largest producer of TNT in the country. The company decided to construct a new city on the land outside of the plant, after the buffer zones were no longer needed for dynamite production.
