Brief History of Herlong, CA
The unincorporated community of Herlong is situated in southern Lassen County, California. Herlong is about 45 miles south of Susanville, California and approximately 70 miles north of Reno, Nevada. The Sierra Army Depot was built in 1942, which resulted in the creation of Herlong because a town was needed to house the civilian employees. There is a document that is displayed at the headquarters of the Sierra Depot that states the Herlong was the name of the first Army ordinance officer to die in WWII, Captain Herlong.
