Brief History of Hollywood, CA
There were Native Americans living in the canyons of Santa Monica when the first Spanish explorers reached the area no known as Hollywood. Eventually the Indians moved to missions along the coast. After the Spanish government divided the area into two, Acreage to the west became part of Rancho La Brea and settlements to the east became Rancho Los Feliz. The Ranchos were sub-divided during the 1800’s. A man named H.H. Wilcox bought and area of Rancho La Brea and named it “Hollywood.” Within years he sold large residential lots to wealthy Midwesterners who were interested in having homes in California so they could spend there winters.
